Ace Your Next Interview: A Pre-Interview Checklist for Success
Have an upcoming job interview? Review this checklist to help prepare!
Before Your Interview:
- Have an accurate and error-free resume.
- If you have a LinkedIn, ensure it matches your resume.
- Have 2-3 professional references on hand.
- Make sure social media is work-appropriate or private.
- Have a clear understanding of what you want from the job (type of work, management style, compensation, time off, in-office, etc.).
- Be able to professionally articulate why you’re looking for a new position.
- Research the role and the company beforehand – it shows you care and leaves a good impression.
- Have questions you want to ask ready so you don’t forget.
During Your Interview:
- Be on time.
- For virtual interviews, test your internet connection is working and make sure you’re in an appropriate location that’s quiet, distraction-free, and has a clear background.
- For in-person interviews, know where you’re going and practice your handshake.
- Wear clean, position appropriate, attire.
- Maintain comfortable body language.
- Feel free to let them know you’re a bit nervous.
After Your Interview:
- Send a “Thank You” email shortly following your interview
- Send an invitation to the interviewer(s) you interacted with on LinkedIn
- If you didn’t land the job but are still interested in the organization, look for meaningful ways to stay in touch!
By taking extra time before interviews to ensure you are well-prepared and informed, you can make the experience an opportunity for networking, growth, and learning.
